Chances are that you’ve never tried savory oatmeal before. I can’t blame you! I had never tried it either until a fellow blogger started talking about it. For months now my search engine has off and on been the recipient of my savory oatmeal recipes research. I have looked at dozens of savory oatmeal recipes that use parmesan, meat, veggies, pepper, eggs, and chicken stock. At first I wanted to gag just a bit.

What is Savory Oatmeal?
Savory oatmeal is exactly how it sounds! Instead of a sweet bowl of oats you will be enjoying a savory bowl of oats. The options are endless with savory oatmeal. Think delectable eggs, bacon, avocado, spinach, chives, and plump tomatoes!
I have to confess something now, the first time I heard of savory oatmeal, my gag reflex kicked in a little bit. Are you the same way right now? The idea of switching gears with oatmeal from sweet to savory just doesn’t seem right! Trust me, these savory oatmeal recipes are going to seem a wee bit odd at first, but if you give them a chance, I believe like me, you may just convert over.
The Benefits of Eating Savory Oatmeal
One of the top reasons to eat savory oatmeal is that it gives you the opportunity to get more veggies into your morning routine. Sweet oatmeal is great for fruit and savory oatmeal is great for veggies.
My favorite savory oatmeal has ample amounts of zucchini and honestly just a tiny bit of sweetness to it. The zucchini soaks in all the flavors and is the best of both sweet and savory worlds.
Savory oatmeal is also going to give you easy protein. Adding some egg whites, whole eggs, or bacon is not out of the question! Done right, your taste buds will thank you!
What is the Best Way to Cook Oats?
There are many ways to cook oats, but here are the four most common ways of cooking oats. I personally find stovetop the easiest, but I know many people that prefer their overnight oats or baked into muffins!

What can I add to Oatmeal for Flavor?
Savory oatmeal flavors are endless, but here are some ideas to get you started. Any savory oatmeal recipes that you try may have versions of these combinations
- Cauliflower – this one blends with the oats very nicely
- Nuts like walnuts and pecans
- Butter (yet butter!)
Do all these bold flavors weird you out a little? It has taken me months to muster up the courage to try these savory oatmeal recipe, and now that I’ve done it, they are truly not that bold! These everyday flavors are typically ones that you would eat for dinner or lunch. Mentally prepare yourself for a breakfast casserole-like taste, and you will be good to go!

I love the intro that Aimee writes to this dish. Just the way that she weaves the tale of how she cooked and prepared this tasty dish, made me long for the summer months of picking fresh greens from the garden. The integration of spinach into this dish sends it over the edge into spectacular.

My THMers, this would be a crossover dish.
Jaclyn is a Holistic Nutritionist and a self proclaimed foodie, and her recipes completely prove that! This recipe was from back in September of 2019, but it is still proving popular! This is a great recipe for those that commute, or need to grab a quick breakfast throughout the week.
THMers this is a great S-Helper to have on hand for snacks or for a quick on the the go breakfast choice. I love the use of sun dried tomatoes!
The avocado! The avocado! The avocado! I just love avocados (can you tell?) so when I see a recipe that uses avocado I have to jump and shout and RUN to try it.
I also love that Keli from the Healthy Toast kept this recipe nice and simple, there is not extra ingredients or frilly spices (although feel free to add them if you wish). This would be an excellent recipe to start your savory oatmeal adventure with.
This recipe has a lot of potential to go a lot of different directions! Sam created it to be very versatile and customizable to your own unique flavor palate. As a THMer, I love the use of nutritional yeast because I know the benefits of that delightful product.
This could be a THM crossover, E or S depending on the toppings you use.

The last recipe is not savory oatmeal in the strictest sense. I’ll be honest, this is a recipe I came up with when I was still in the ‘thinking’ about it phase before I took the plunge and tried true savory oatmeal.
This one is going to have some sweetness, but minimum. I had never prior had veggies in my oatmeal. So, I spent some time experimenting with zucchini, which I thought would be the least repulsive vegetable to put in oatmeal.
I ended up loving the flavor. This THM E meal could be a great one to get you started on the savory oatmeal journey.
