Using Sea Buckthorn Serum

Sea Buckthorn serum has been spinning around the internet for quite some time as an age-defining miracle. There are plenty of serums designed to bring moisture and healing to your skin, and a sea buckthorn face oil is just another resource that may help your skin.

Your first line of defense against skincare age is proper diet. Yes, I said it. Want to reduce your aging skin? Stop eating chips, pizza, diet soda, high fructose syrup, and processed foods. Your skin is the reflection of what goes into your body. The second line of defense if proper hydration. Drinking water allows your body to defend itself against the toxins that are so rampant in our lifestyles.

If you want to learn more about living a healthy eating lifestyle, you might want to consider Trim Healthy Mama, you can learn more about it through my coaching page.

Approach your skincare and diet in balance. Remember your season, give yourself grace, and extremes are never healthy.

Buckthorn can be a wonderfully nourishing remedy for skincare in addition to proper diet and hydration. However, there is one recommendation that you MUST heed. Quality, quality, quality.

Sea Buckthorn Oil Skin Benefits

With any plant, there are a lot of nitty gritty scientific facts we could get into. I like to keep things simple.

  • Buckthorn is considered an invasive species in the Midwest. Mostly because it competes with other natural plants for space, water, and sunlight. It was brought to the Midwest from Europe in the mid 1800s, but was soon regulated and nurseries stopped selling. Especially in older neighborhoods buckthorn is seen often.
  • There are around 110 different species of these shrubs and many come with their own chemical makeup and subsequent benefits.
  • Despite it’s frowned upon nuisance, the plant is extremely beneficial. It is most well-known for its antioxidant properties and anti-inflammatory properties.

Is Sea Buckthorn good for skin?

  • Sea Buckthorn Berry Oil is the most beneficial for your skin. This species is found in China, Russia, Canada, and Europe.
  • The most notable vitamins present are, Vitamins A, C and E and Omega 7.
  • The most interesting benefit of Buckthorn is the carotenoids. Carotenoids are organic pigments that defend antioxidant parts of our environment.
  • When the berries go through pressing, they release the minerals and vitamins that are beneficial to our skin or diet.
  • The oil is extracted from the seeds, not the fruit, and it produces a beautiful orange color.
  • Amazingly the plant contains all the omega’s (3,6, 7, and 9)!
  • Then when applied to the skin the two-fold benefit of the antioxidant defense and the healing of the omega 7 and vitamins.
  • Collagen production is also a benefit of Buckthorn.

Using Essential Oils on our Face

Using essential oils on the skin has become very problematic over the last few years. It’s a hot-button topic that is sure to get everyone’s undies in a bunch. Some high-quality companies claim that essential oils in skincare is 100% safe and effective. Others claim that essential oils are extremely damaging to the skin.

There is nothing more powerful when it comes to natural DIY products than doing your own research.

I can’t boil it down any simpler than that. I personally am weeding out most essential oils in my skincare products, but not exclusively. We already know that essential oils are extremely volatile, powerful, and potent. This article was extremely helpful as a non-biased opinion.

I continue to use slight amounts of essential oils in my skincare routine, with the exception of any citrus or Phototoxic essential oils. Although there are many benefits for citrus essential oils, when placed on the skin they have a higher risk of burning the skin like a sunburn. Not something I would relish on my face.

Oil Cleansing Method with the Sea Buckthorn Serum

My favorite part of my current skincare routine is using a simple rendition of the oil cleansing method with a Konjac exfoliating sponge.

The best konjac sponge I have used is currently from Trim Healthy Mama. It is so beautiful and luscious to use. Honestly, I have never felt anything like it. If you are interested in a little more of an exotic exfoliating experience, I recently started also using the Tao Cleansing Brush and foresee myself never going back. It is truly an amazing tool for your face! My favorite part is the UV light that cleanses all the ‘gross’ away after your mini facial each night!

There are many ways to modify the oil cleansing method for your skin type, however here are the basics.

Making a DIY Buckthorn Face Oil

The ingredients for making this Sea Buckthorn Serum need to be high quality. After gathering your ingredients, all you need to do is measure everything out and place it into a tinted glass jar. I strongly recommend that you measure everything on a kitchen scale. This allows for a more exact measurement and with skincare products, we want exact!

These are the ingredients that I have used for the recipe below:

Sea Buckthorn Oil

JoJoba Carrier Oil

MCT Oil

 Frankincense Oil

Real Lavender Dried Flowers

Buckthorn Serum

Buckthorn Serum

Instructions

  1. It is best to use a kitchen scale for these ingredients.
  2. Combine them together in a small amber glass jar with a dropper, like this one.
  3. Use about 10 drops on the face every day.
  4. Optionally you can infuse dried lavender leaves into the oil.

Note on Essential Oils

I am the biggest fan of Beeyoutiful Essential Oils. I have used them for years and respect this company greatly. However, I have never claimed that only one essential oil company is the ‘end all’. Although Beeyoutiful Essential Oils are my ‘go-to’ I have also used the following:

Frankincense from Plant Therapy

Frankincense from DoTerra

Frankincense from Young Living
