There’s something about teaching the names of the days of the week that either feels super fun or endlessly repetitive, right? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve sung the days of the week song while pouring milk over granola in the morning or while we’re driving to church. The concept of time and learning the order of the days is such an important part of the early years, but it can take a while for young learners to remember which day comes next.

I created this free days of the week printable worksheet as part of my ‘life skills’ printables that I’m using for our homeschool year. I have not completely fleshed out what our life skills time will look like, but it will be something I set up the night before school with the intention that my oldest two can independently work through some ‘life skills’, while I finish up work in the morning. I am not sure how well it will work, but I’m going to give it a good try!

This printable was designed to add some bright colors and learning fun to our morning routine while giving my kindergartener and 2nd grader the extra practice they need in a fun way.

And the best part? This free worksheet comes with a two-page printable for personal or classroom use, plus an optional upgrade that adds a Velcro dot matching activity your kids will love, providing them with another hands-on way to learn the correct order of the days.

Teaching the Days of the Week

Learning the days of the week isn’t just about memorization; it’s a building block for the concept of time management, developing a sense of routine, and connecting to the months of the year. For many young children, the days of the week song is one of their favorite songs, and it’s often paired with daily routines in the classroom or homeschool.

When young students can confidently name and sequence the days, they feel more secure in their daily routines—knowing that Monday means co-op, Tuesday is library day, and Friday might mean a family movie night. It also helps them participate during calendar time or circle time, where they practice identifying the correct day during your morning routine.

If you’ve ever struggled with your first grader saying, “Is it Saturday yet?” on a Wednesday, you know how helpful it is to practice these skills regularly. Around our home, we often use “how many sleeps is it until_________.” And although that can be helpful for a time, our kids also need to learn how to sequence the days.
