As I was browsing through the Fall 2026 Harvest House Publishers catalog, one title immediately caught my attention: The Gospel Way Catechism for Kids by Trevin Wax and Thomas West.
Out of all the books in the catalog, this was the one I was most excited about.
As a mom of five boys, I’m always looking for practical resources that help us intentionally disciple our children and keep conversations about God’s Word at the center of our home. Over the years, we’ve worked through several catechisms together, often discussing a question around the dinner table before sharing a meal. Those simple moments have sparked some wonderful conversations about God, the gospel, and what we believe as Christians.
So when Harvest House Publishers sent me The Gospel Way Catechism for Kids to review, I was incredibly grateful. They also included the companion card set, which immediately caught my attention as a practical way to reinforce each lesson.
After spending time looking through both resources, I can already see us incorporating this catechism into our homeschool year and returning to the dinner-table discussions that have been such a meaningful part of our family’s discipleship. In the past, we’ve done short catechisms around the dinner table as a family and turned it into a guessing game! I would pose the questions, and then every family member would offer an explanation before I read the catechism response.
The boys loved that routine, and I think that this is by far the best catechism for kids that I’ve come across, and with school (for us) starting up next week, we’ll be adding this to our dinner time rotation!

A Beautiful Introduction to Biblical Truth
One of the first things I appreciated about The Gospel Way Catechism for Kids was how approachable it feels.
Catechisms can sometimes seem intimidating, especially for families who have never used one before. This book does an excellent job of removing that intimidation. Before readers even begin the fifty questions, the authors spend time explaining what a catechism is, why Christians have used them throughout church history, and how families can incorporate one into everyday life.
I found this introductory section especially helpful. Rather than assuming parents already know how to use a catechism, Trevin Wax and Thomas West gently guide readers through the purpose behind the questions and explain how this resource is designed to point children back to Scripture and ultimately to Christ.
Whether this is your family’s first catechism or you’ve used others before, the introduction provides helpful context that prepares both parents and children for the journey ahead.
A Thoughtful Pattern That Builds Understanding
One of my favorite aspects of this book is its consistent format.
Each of the fifty foundational truths follows the same simple pattern:
- Question and Answer
- Supporting Scripture
- Explanation
- Table Talk Questions
- Prayer Practice
I love how each section builds upon the previous one.
The question and answer help children memorize biblical truth. The supporting Scripture reminds them that these truths come directly from God’s Word. The explanation expands on the doctrine in language children can understand, while the Table Talk questions naturally encourage meaningful family conversations. Finally, each lesson ends with a simple prayer practice that helps children respond to what they’ve learned.
As someone who appreciates practical discipleship resources, I found this format incredibly well thought out. It doesn’t simply teach information—it encourages conversation, Scripture memory, and prayer together as a family.
A Resource Made for Family Discipleship
One thing I appreciated throughout the book is that it doesn’t feel like another homeschool curriculum or another item to check off the list.
Instead, it feels like an invitation.
An invitation to slow down.
An invitation to ask meaningful questions.
An invitation to open God’s Word together.
Our family has worked through catechisms around the dinner table before, and those simple conversations have often led to some of our children’s biggest questions about God, salvation, and the Christian life. Reading through this book immediately made me think about bringing that tradition back during our homeschool year.
Because each lesson is fairly short, it’s easy to imagine reading one question during dinner, discussing the Table Talk questions together, and ending the meal in prayer.
Sometimes the most meaningful discipleship happens in ordinary moments like these.
The Companion Card Set
Along with the book, Harvest House also sent the companion catechism cards, and I think they make an excellent addition.
The set includes all fifty catechism questions, with the question on the front and the answer, along with supporting Scripture, on the back.
Although I don’t know exactly how I would personally use these, I think they are a great addition! The cards would be perfect for reviewing during breakfast, keeping on the kitchen table, taking along in the car, or even letting the kids quiz one another. For us, I think the book is completely adequate on its own, but the cards certainly could make this more expansive for some families.
Sound Theology for Growing Hearts
Perhaps what I appreciate most about The Gospel Way Catechism for Kids is its clear focus on the gospel.
The questions don’t simply teach children what Christians believe—they continually point them back to who God is, what Christ has accomplished, and how believers are called to respond.
The topics progress naturally through foundational doctrines like God, creation, sin, salvation, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, the church, and the Christian life. For children growing up in a culture filled with competing messages about truth, this provides a strong biblical foundation rooted in Scripture.
Final Thoughts
Overall, I would gladly recommend The Gospel Way Catechism for Kids to Christian families, homeschool families, grandparents, Sunday school teachers, and children’s ministry leaders.
As we begin another homeschool year, I’m looking forward to working through these fifty questions around our dinner table. My hope is that these simple conversations will help my boys not only memorize biblical truth but also grow in their understanding of who God is and what the gospel means for their everyday lives.
