Discover how God reveals hidden joy in ordinary moments with this heartfelt devotional on Finding Beauty in the Mundane. Encouragement for moms in everyday life.
I stood at the door of the chicken coop again, sighing. I knew what was waiting behind it.
Dozens of eggs.
Dirty, crusted, slightly smelly eggs. Eggs nestled under layers of straw, feathers, and who knows what else. Eggs that had been sitting there for a long time, ignored not because they weren’t valuable, but because I just… couldn’t deal with them. Not yesterday, or the day before, or the day before that. I’d actually be slightly embarrassed to admit how long many of these eggs have been waiting for me.
I’ve been thinking a lot about hidden beauty lately. About how God has a way of weaving unexpected glory into the parts of life we tend to resent. My dirty eggs, in all their smudged, speckled disarray, became a perfect metaphor.
Because under the grime were colors that caught the light, whites, creams, browns, and the softest sage green. Each egg is a little masterpiece. A small, quiet miracle.
And I nearly missed it.

When the Mundane Feels Too Heavy
Let me back up a bit. I’m a mom of five little boys. I live on 40 acres, I work full-time, and I’m currently postpartum. Which, if you’ve been there, you know is a journey of joy and fragility mixed into one. There are days I feel so overwhelmed by the ordinary. Dishes. Diapers. Dirty floors. Grocery store runs. Crumbs in the car. And yes—those dirty eggs that I really don’t want to collect.
There are moments when my thoughts betray me and I start to feel that dreaded whisper: This is unfair. I can’t keep up. Why does everything fall on me?
It’s an ugly mindset. But it’s real.
And that’s where God met me, right there, knee-deep in chicken bedding and self-pity.
Beauty in the Mundane Things
We human beings are wired to look for fireworks. Grand gestures. Big miracles. And yet, God often whispers through the small things.
“Be still, and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10 (ESV)
Stillness doesn’t usually come with glitter or a spotlight. It comes in the form of ordinary tasks, like wiping counters or changing diapers, or organizing egg cartons. But it’s in the stillness that we see clearly.
In fact, Scripture is full of examples of God doing extraordinary things through the ordinary. Think of Moses and a shepherd’s staff. David and a sling. Jesus and a simple loaf of bread.
There is such a thing as divine simplicity.
The richness of life isn’t just found in mountaintop moments. It’s tucked inside the everyday life we’re living right now.
The Hidden Beauty of Dirty Eggs
Those rainbow-hued eggs covered in grime? That’s my heart some days. Covered in weariness. Hidden beneath discouragement and bad attitudes. But God doesn’t toss me aside; He gently washes and restores. He sees what’s underneath.
“But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not look on his appearance… For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.’” – 1 Samuel 16:7 (ESV)
Maybe God allows the grime, the hard things, the exhaustion, the seemingly endless chores—so we can see the true colors that lie beneath. So we can experience the sacred in the mundane moments.
Embracing Everyday Moments
The smell of coffee in the morning. A hug from a little one with peanut butter fingers. The sound of rain on the roof while folding laundry. A phone call from a friend that comes just when you need it. These are moments of beauty. I often miss these moments, so we need to be intentional about stepping back and seeing the vast and beautiful tapestry that God is weaving in our lives. It’s for his glory, but we get joy out of it
At first glance, they don’t seem like much. But when strung together, they make a life, a beautiful, sacred, meaningful life.
“And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus…” – Colossians 3:17 (ESV)
Even washing eggs.
Even wiping tears.
Even wondering how you’ll keep doing this day after day.
From Mundane to Meaningful
Our daily routines can be holy ground. They can point us to a God who is intimately involved in the small details of our lives.
“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God.” – Luke 12:6 (ESV)
Not one moment is forgotten, either.
I’ve learned that choosing to see beauty isn’t about changing our surroundings—it’s about changing our vision.
God is often in the background of our ordinary tasks, painting joy in unlikely places. Sometimes the big difference in our spiritual growth comes not from a big event, but from a small shift in our heart posture.
When the Grocery Store Aisle Becomes Sacred
Even the grocery store can be holy ground. When I’m rushing through the aisles with a baby strapped to me and a toddler yelling about bananas, I can choose to sigh… or smile.
I can choose to see the beauty in the chaos. That’s a hard ask. But it’s also a healing one.
Because beauty isn’t always neat, sometimes, it’s covered in mud. But it’s still beautiful.
Finding Beauty in the Mundane: Let the Eggs Be Dirty
What are your “dirty eggs”?
What are you avoiding because it feels too messy, too overwhelming, or too beneath you?
Could it be that God has tucked some beauty there just for you to find?
Friend, you don’t have to clean everything up before God shows you the beauty. Let the eggs be dirty. Let the floor be sticky. Let the list be unfinished.
Many people have asked about my spiral egg storage. You can find it here. You can also find many more of my household favorites by visiting my Amazon storefront.
God is still present.
And He’s still working—in the stillness, in the mess, in the mundane things we often overlook.
You don’t need a new job, a new season, or a perfect moment. The glory is already here—in your daily life, in your ordinary tasks, and yes, even in your dusty old chicken coop.
You just have to look a little closer.
