1. More About the Author

Marty Machowski is a best-selling children’s author and family life pastor at Covenant Fellowship Church in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania. Many families already know him from one of his more popular books Wonderfull: Ancient Psalms Ever New. That book was also a ECPA 2021 Book of the Year Award Finalist.

He has a unique ability to take the larger redemptive story of Scripture and make it understandable and engaging for grade-school kids and older children alike.

What I love most about Machowski’s writing is how he blends creative storytelling with a strong theological foundation. He’s not just writing stories to entertain, he’s inviting kids and entire families into the ancient story ever new of Jesus.

2. More About the Illustrator

The illustrations in The Sword are by Blair Files, whose work immediately captures a child’s imagination. She works as a freelance illustrator in Rome! Her illustrations are vivid, expressive, and pull you right into the adventure alongside Magnus and his friends.

When paired with Machowski’s words, the artwork helps kids visualize the journey, the danger, and ultimately the discovery of God’s truth. It’s easy to see how these illustrations will make the book appealing to kids of all ages, from younger readers listening along to older kids reading independently.

3. The Layout

The layout of this book is part adventure novel, part Bible study, and part treasure of God’s Word. Each chapter contains a section of the story, followed by corresponding Scripture passages and questions. This built-in study guide helps kids see that the story of Magnus is pointing to something greater—God’s good news revealed in the book of Romans.

I especially appreciate that the devotional material is woven into the story without feeling forced. Parents can use it as a starting point for family conversations, or kids can read through it independently and still take away important truths. It’s the kind of resource that offers flexibility, whether you want a read-aloud for family time or a devotional for your child’s personal reading.

4. Recommended Ages

So who is this book for? I’d recommend it for older kids (ages 8–14) who can track with a longer fictional story and the rich theology that it presents.

“The goal of this book is to introduce grade-school childn to Paul’s letter to the Romans. Romans is the clearest, most complete, expanation of the gospel in the New Testament. John Piper calls it “the greatest letter ever written,” and he compares its theological insight to Mount Everest.”
Marty Machowski, The Sword, page VIII

That being said, it’s also a wonderful read-aloud for entire families. Grade-school kids will be captivated by the adventure, while teens and parents alike will be challenged by the depth of the teaching. That’s one of the strengths of Machowski’s writing, it truly is accessible to kids of all ages without ever watering down the truth.

5. Where to Buy

The Sword: Magnus and the Mystery of Romans is available directly from New Growth Press, as well as from other retailers like Amazon and Christian Book. If you’re already a fan of Machowski’s other works like you’ll definitely want to add this one to your shelf.

6. Final Mom Thoughts on The Sword

As a mom, I’m always looking for resources that not only entertain my kids but also guide them toward Christ. The Sword does exactly that. It combines a good story with the life-changing treasure of Scripture. The adventure of Magnus pulls readers in, but what they walk away with is far greater—the reminder that God’s Word is alive, powerful, and full of hope.

I can see this book being used in so many different ways:

  • As a family read-aloud during evening devotions.
  • As an independent devotional for older children.
  • As a resource for Sunday school or small groups.

If you’re looking for a book that will point your kids toward Jesus through an exciting biblical voyage, this is a must-read. Marty Machowski has once again given families a tool that makes Scripture come alive and shows kids that behind every adventure is the hidden treasure of God’s Word.

In short—don’t miss this one. Your family will be encouraged, your kids will be engaged, and you’ll have another wonderful resource to help anchor your home in the good news of the gospel.
