My son Wyatt is four years old. He is insightful, funny, loving, and quirky, and loves anything that is trucks, knights, buildings, or construction.

Recently he asked to be a knight for our church’s Fall Celebration. I was able to procure him a knight costume complete with a sword and shield, and that’s where the fun began!

First, he had to learn what he could ‘fight’ and what he could not fight. Then we taught him how to hold the shield and use it to protect himself. Finally, we talked about what the knights of old were like. They were protectors of good.

Capsizing on this new fascination of his, I decided it was an excellent time to start learning about the Armor of God and the forms of spiritual battle that we all face. We was hooked!

There are spiritual forces of evil all around us and preparing our children is an essential part of the Christian faith. When the day of evil comes we want our kids prepared with the Armor of God to fight off whatever comes! The good new is

Some Bible teachings are hit or miss with preschoolers. Something that connects with one will go over the head of another, it’s why capsizing on these teachable moments is so powerful and so helpful!

I started the process of teaching my children about the Armor of God, by getting a good book about the subject.

When you are looking to pair activities and books it’s important that you find a book that will connect with your child and adequately teach the skill or lesson that you want to focus on.

In my case, I turned to a book called, “Will the Mighty Warrior.”

What is so unique about this book is that it weaves the Armor of God into the imaginative play of a young boy. This makes the book related and intriguing to young learners.

Looking for good books to explain the Armor of God to little girls? You can check this one out, but my recommendation for little girls is to find women of the Bible who showed with their actions the armor of God. Bible Belles is a fantastic resource for this.

Start teaching the Armor of God by reading straight from God’s word. Although there are many amazing resources to help aid you in teaching a Bible passage, there is no substitute for reading from the Bible.

Here is the Armor of God passage from Ephesians 6 (ESV version) –

Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one;  and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,  praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,

Ephesians 6:14-18 ESV

There are seven parts to the Armor of God from Ephesians 6

  • The Belt of Truth (vs 14)
  • The Breastplate of Righteousness (vs 14)
  • The Gospel of Peace (vs 15)
  • The Shield of Faith (vs 16)
  • The Helmet of Salvation (vs 17)
  • The Sword of the Spirit (vs 17)
  • Prayer (vs 18)

Armor of God Coloring Pages

Coloring crafts can be a fun way to engage scripture with your child. They will hear the scripture and then interact with it in coloring!

My oldest does not love coloring pages, but my second-born seems to have a longer attention span for them. Each Armor of God coloring page includes the scripture and a simple corresponding section for preschoolers to color.

Armor of God for Preschoolers

As we dive further into the armor of God for preschoolers keep in mind that this activity can be modified for your unique learner.

I really think that this is where the activity gets fun!

Read Ephesians 6 with your child and review each portion of scripture with the armor it represents. It’s a good idea to add additional vocabulary and concepts such as explaining in preschool terms what righteousness means.

Here is a sample of a preschool conversation about righteousness.
Adult- Do you know what righteousness means, Wyatt?
Child- No, I don’t think so.
Adult- What does it mean to make good decisions?
Child- I choose the right thing, not the wrong thing?
Adult- Yes, and that’s sort of what righteousness means. It means that we are choosing the right thing according to what God says is right.

According to the Merriwether Dictionary, righteousness means: acting in accord with divine or moral law: free from guilt or sin.

Other terms may need more in-depth explanation as well.

Build your Armor of God Boy or Girl

I like laminating these sheets and pieces of armor. Then I take small pieces of velcro and put them on the boy/girl and pieces of armor so my learner can build the armor of God like a puzzle. Each piece of Armor represents something from the Ephesians 6 passage.

Both a boy and a girl have been provided for download.

Armor of God Colouring Pages has also been added for the individual pieces of God’s armor.

Additional Modifications

There are many ways to ‘go further’ with the armor of God for preschoolers. There is a coloring sheet provided of the entire girl or boy in their armor. You could make the activity more personal by printing out a picture of the learner and gluing the face in the appropriate space.

These printables are great resources for a Sunday School lesson or teaching the Armor of God at home.

Here are a few other ideas.

  • Practice literacy skills by having the child write out ‘A-R-M-O-R’
  • Watch and learn a song about the Armor of God like this one.
  • Watch an explanation video made for preschoolers like this one.
  • If finances allow, set up a dramatic play area and allow them to dress up!
