3 Benefits of the Peace of God

We love it when you share!

It’s time to be honest with ourselves – our lives are busy.  Experiencing God’s peace does not happen as much as we’d like. However, the benefits of the peace of God are immeasurable.

We intentionally make our lives busy and our days so full of people and things that may or may not need to be a part of our journey that we, whether knowingly or not, detract from the opportunities for authentic, spiritual peace to enter our lives.  We need to reflect on our sense of awareness and the cultivation of a peaceful presence in our days if we hope to grow closer to Christ – an important part of our God-given purpose.

Let’s be honest – when was the last time that you were so distracted by the things around you that you completely missed something important?

For me, I would say the last time that comes to mind was yesterday when I asked my husband to bring in the groceries and he kindly informed me that I had already put them away. Apologies to my husband who is gracious in these types of situations with me. I blankly stared at the kitchen as I tried to recall putting the groceries away only to give up as I realized my brain was doing too many things at once.

Maybe another good example is how many times I’ve looked at the walls of our shower as I’ve wondered if I had washed my hair or not. Once again I was thinking about the to-do list that I needed to accomplish instead of the present task at hand.

The truth, dear friends, is that we should be practicing far more intention in our daily lives, focusing our minds and our hearts on the will of our God, and considering what He desires of us.  Experiencing God’s peace should be of far more importance than it is. As His chosen followers, we have been instructed to:

Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.

Colossians 3:2

But we often lack this level of peace in our daily lives. We are busy, frantic, distracted, and tried. We need a paradigm shift that brings our attention to the fact that God is with us in all times, and He desires for us to lead a simple, peaceful life.

What is the Peace of God?

The peace of God, as described in the New Testament, is a supernatural peace bestowed upon believers through the power of the Holy Spirit. This peace is not dependent on external circumstances but is rooted in the love of God and the assurance of His presence.

Really think about the first part of that sentence – it is not dependent on external circumstances. It’s so easy to let our minds and hearts become frantic, but when we have the peace of God in our life it will become our anchor, which I know is a very ‘Christian’ thing to say, but it’s true. Think of the peace of God as a heavy anchor. No matter how hard your life is rocked that anchor will keep you safe and secure.

The Greek word for this peace, “eirēnē,” signifies a state of harmony and well-being that is divinely granted. Jesus, the Prince of Peace, promised His followers this unique kind of peace, which transcends human understanding and provides a foundation for a fulfilling life.

You might say that peace is a state of absolute calm or tranquility, or that peace is the absence of war or conflict.  And you’re right. But experiencing God’s peace extends far beyond our narrow mindset and includes an active connection with our faith lives as well.  The type of peace that exists in the spiritual context is much simpler and can only be offered to us through our relationship with God.

In the midst of chaos and uncertainty, the peace of God offers a sanctuary of calm and tranquility that surpasses human understanding. This divine peace is the “peace of Christ,” and it should be a cornerstone of our daily life. When the peace of Christ is our daily foundation we will experience a profound sense of serenity and stability that cannot be found when we are pursuing worldly pursuits.

Experiencing God’s Peace

The peace of Christ is dependent on our ability to place our needs, our dreams, and our very lives in His hands and trust in His ability to provide for us rather than relying solely on our own internal composition to problem-solve and get ahead.  Jesus assured us that the love of God is full of peace when he taught:

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

John 14:27 ESV

Those words instill in us the understanding that the simple peace of God is brought to us through the sacrifice of Christ, and cannot be influenced by the worries or anxieties of our minds.  Experiencing God’s peace is a gift of something far greater than any sense of serenity that we could hope to create for ourselves.

The simple peace of God is not something that can be seen but must be felt within us.  We will not find expressions of God’s peace starkly illustrated on a billboard before our eyes reminding us to, “Live simply.” We need to turn inward and realize that tranquility comes from knowing Christ and allowing his presence dwell in our minds and hearts.

Experiencing God’s peace involves a deep, personal relationship with Christ Jesus and a steadfast trust in God’s promises. Here are some ways to cultivate this peace in our daily lives:

  1. Prayer and Meditation: Regular communication with God through prayer and meditation on God’s Word helps to center our hearts and minds, bringing us closer to God’s presence.
  2. Trust in God’s Plan: Embracing the knowledge that God’s plan is perfect, even in hard times, allows us to surrender our worries and find peace in His sovereignty.
  3. Living in Accordance with God’s Law: By following the teachings of Christ and living a life of good works, we align ourselves with God’s will, paving the way for His peace to fill our hearts.
  4. Seeking the Holy Spirit: Inviting the Holy Spirit to guide and comfort us strengthens our connection with God and enhances our ability to experience His peace.

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we[a] have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:1 ESV

Benefits of the Peace of God

I am not recommending that we abandon all our responsibilities and forgo the busyness that is necessary in our lives to help us to thrive.  But I am suggesting that we re-evaluate where our priorities lie, and if we feel that our lives have become too devoid of simplicity and peace, that we take small action steps toward de-cluttering our spiritual core – the part of us that knows God’s answers do not lie in the rush, but rather, in the moments of stillness.

We can encourage the relaxation of mind, body, and spirit when we welcome a life of peace and joy that is given to us by the peace of God. Here are three simple benefits from allowing the peace of God to transform your mind, body, and spirit.

Benefit #1 – Wisdom

When we identify the people and things that fill our souls with peace, we can begin to gain clarity and focus on what truly makes us happy.  God’s Word supports this practice:

Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding,

Proverbs 3:13 ESV

Consider the wisdom of your soul – it knows who you are and what you need to do to slow down and simplify the life you’ve built.

Notice how you feel in different situations and around different people and respond to those feelings without judgment. Then, work on increasing the amount of time that you can commit to spending doing what you love with the people you love.

All of this should be rooted in prayer and scripture reading.

Benefit #2 Presence

There are two types of ‘presence’ we are talking about with this benefit. When we invite the peace of Jesus into our lives we will experience more of the presence of people we are closest to and more of the presence of God.

Answering all the emails in your inbox while you sit at the dinner table with your family is not going to mean anything to those people who mean the most in your life.  While there are many responsibilities that are unavoidable, there is something to be said for committing to presence in whatever situation you find yourself in.

Understand that being busy does not make you any more successful or important than someone else who has already prioritized stillness – in fact, often, being busy serves no purpose other than to detract from the people and things that are physically near.

When we make experiencing God’s peace a priority we will also grow closer to God and His presence! What greater benefit than that is there?!

Benefit #3 Stability

God’s peace provides a firm foundation of stability amidst the uncertainties of life. This stability allows us to maintain a positive mindset and clear conscience, regardless of the chaos around us. With the peace of God, we are better equipped to handle stress, reduce anxiety, and maintain good health. This inner stability is a reflection of God’s perfect peace, which sustains us through personal trials, and everyday challenges. By resting in God’s peace, we find the strength to persevere and thrive.

We must evaluate how we spend our days, and encourage ourselves to live simple, peaceful, and faith-filled lives; lives that not only allow us to thrive in our own pursuits but in our relationship with God as well.  We are to live a life of freedom and humility (Galatians 5:13), so ensuring that we are living a life that prioritizes the amount of time we spend in the cultivation of our character and in the work, we do in service of God and of others is needed for a life of clear intention.

For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

Galatians ESV

The Peace of God

Our world is noisy, yet we’ve become so accustomed to the din of our environment that we have become immune to noticing how this constant chaos negatively impacts our spirits.  We know that God speaks to us when we can find quiet stillness and focus our attention on Him, but how can we create and nourish that connection if we cannot find the silence?

Experiencing God’s peace can start with creating a regular prayer and meditation practice. It is a wonderful way to get started in the pursuit of silence and will lead to a daily commitment of quiet.  God is with us in every moment, waiting to wrap us in His warm embrace and grant us the simplicity and peace that our busy lives so desperately need. How will you accept His care today and live with purpose, on purpose?

The peace of God is a wonderful benefit that enriches every aspect of our lives. It brings wisdom, enhances our sense of God’s presence, and provides stability in the midst of chaos. By seeking and embracing this divine peace, we align ourselves with God’s plan and experience true freedom and joy.

In a world filled with turmoil, the peace of God stands as a beacon of hope, guiding us toward a life of serenity, fulfillment, and eternal life. As we cultivate this peace through prayer, trust, and obedience, we reflect the love of Christ and the grace of God, shining as lights in the spiritual darkness and embodying the gospel of peace in our daily lives. May God’s peace be with you always.
