A Simple Fridge Makeover – Without Paint!

We love it when you share!

If your kitchen style feels outdated or your refrigerator looks worn out but you’re not ready to splurge on a brand-new fridge, this simple DIY fridge makeover is the perfect solution.

In full disclosure, I do use paint on the refrigerator handles. The main part of the fridge is done without paint and for me, that was the part that I did not want to ‘ruin’ with paint. The handles are easily replaced if I would want to someday undo the project or sell the refrigerator.

Using peel-and-stick stainless steel wallpaper and Rub ‘n Buff paint, you can give your fridge a brand-new look without the hassle or permanence of paint. The best part? It’s budget-friendly and easily reversible!

This tutorial will walk you through each step to transform your old appliances into a statement piece in your kitchen. Let’s dive into this fun DIY project!

This has been a dream project of mine for a long time. However, I had it in my head that I needed to paint the refrigerator in order to make it work. Then one day I saw someone on Instagram who had wallpapered her fridge! I wish I could find the reel so I could link it here. The idea was born! I could wallpaper my fridge and possibly achieve a similar effect as painting!

Months went by before I was able to take the time and do this project, but with baby number fives soon arriving, my nesting instincts kicked in and I knew it was time to get this project done! I hope you enjoy this tutorial and pictures as I makeover my fridge to match my oven!

Step-by-Step Guide

Of course, each refrigerator will be slightly different depending on the make, model, and shape. However, my fridge was fairly easy to manage. I know I could do it even better a second time now that I have the process down. The left fridge door has some creases in the wallpaper that in time I’m sure I’ll fix. I have quite a bit of leftover wallpaper from my original purchase, so we’ll see how long it takes me to decide and redo it!

For reference, I purchased 24’x354′ of black stainless steel peel-and-stick wallpaper.

Before wallpaper fridge

1. Clean Your Fridge Surface – Take off Any Handles

Before starting, thoroughly clean the fridge’s surface. Remove dirt, grease, or fingerprints with soap and water, and dry it with a microfiber cloth. This ensures the stick wallpaper adheres smoothly and creates a cohesive look.

Take off any handles or knobs.

2. Prepare Your Materials

Unroll the peel-and-stick stainless steel wallpaper and cut it to size. Measure the fridge doors carefully, ensuring there’s enough overhang to wrap around the edges. A straight line is crucial here for a polished finish.

2. Prepare Your Materials - measuring wallpaper

3. Apply the Wallpaper

Start with one fridge door and peel the backing paper from the wallpaper. Stick it to the fridge surface, starting from the top and working your way down. Use a squeegee to remove any air bubbles as you go. If you’re working on curved areas, make small cuts in the wallpaper for better flexibility. In sections complete the desired areas in the same manner.

3. Apply the Wallpaper - putting on the wallpaper

4. Smooth and Trim

Pro Tip: Don’t rush! Take your time to avoid creases or misalignment.

Once the wallpaper is applied, smooth it out completely and trim any excess with a utility knife. Pay attention to areas like the back of your fridge or the edges for a seamless appearance.

You may need to use a straight-edged knife to cut around any hardware for handles.

5. Transform the Handles with Rub ‘n Buff

The fridge handles are often overlooked, but they’re one of the easiest ways to elevate your fridge’s style. Remove the handles (if possible) for easy application. Lightly sand them to ensure the Rub n Buff adheres well, then apply the paint using a small cloth or your fingers.

Allow the first coat to dry before adding another if needed. Fun colors or metallic finishes like gold can make your fridge pop!

Benefits of This DIY Makeover:

  • Temporary Fix: The peel-and-stick wallpaper is removable, making it a great option for renters or anyone who might want to revert to the original look later.
  • Budget-Friendly: No need to buy a new fridge; this project is affordable and uses materials easily found at local stores or through online pricing.
  • Customizable: With a variety of wallpaper and Rub n Buff paint colors available, you can match your fridge to your kitchen style.

Common Questions:

Does the peel-and-stick wallpaper damage the fridge?

No! At least not the brand that I used. If I was worried about damaging the fridge, I would test it rigorously on a surface area you were not concerned about it ruining. Stainless steel wallpaper is designed to be easily removable without leaving residue. It’s perfect for fresh-painted surfaces and older appliances alike. If it does leave residue after removal, I have always found luck with Goo Gone, which removes residue easily.

Can I use chalkboard paint instead of stainless steel wallpaper?

Absolutely! Chalkboard paint is another fun option for a fridge makeover to add a unique, functional element to your kitchen. Use it on the back of your fridge or even on wine coolers for an interactive twist. My favorite brand is Rustoleum.

What if I notice air bubbles after finishing?

Use a pin to poke tiny holes in the bubbles and smooth them out with a squeegee. This technique preserves the wallpaper’s look.

My Favorite Parts of This Makeover:

  • The handles—thanks to Rub n’ Buff’s transformative power, they truly become the best part of the project.
  • The peel-and-stick wallpaper’s ease of use and availability of products in local stores or online.
  • The cohesive look it adds to the entire kitchen, which was my ultimate goal! I didn’t need it to look perfect, I just needed the illusion of cohesiveness!

Final Thoughts on My Fridge Makeover

Is my fridge perfect? No. Does it perfectly match my stove? Nope. However, I may change over to copper Rub n’ Buff in the future for the handles to see if it matches better. I’m not in any rush as I still like the final result. I went into it knowing that the antique gold Rub n’ Buff would not perfectly match the more copper edging of my Elmira stove.

This simple fridge makeover is a fantastic way to refresh your kitchen without the commitment or cost of a new fridge. The stainless steel wallpaper and Rub n Buff paint are easy to apply, budget-friendly, and create a stunning transformation. Plus, with the option to remove the wallpaper, it’s a temporary fix that doesn’t damage your fridge.

Next time you’re dreaming of a new look for your kitchen, consider giving this DIY project a try. You’ll love how it changes your fridge’s style and adds personality to your space. And who knows—this might even inspire you to tackle more fun, creative projects in your home!
