20 Powerful Christian Mom Books for Growth

We love it when you share!

You may not know this, but I’m a huge bookworm. There are books coming out of every crevice of our home. Christian mom books, children’s books, bible studies, bibles, old books, new books…we’ve got them all. Finding Christian books for mothers is not an easy task these days.

Don’t get me wrong, there are hundreds, if not thousands of Christian books for mom out there, but are they worth reading? Some of them, yes, and some of them a resounding NO. Many Christian mom books have moved in the direction of self-help books rooted in the growth of self-love, instead of rooted in the growth of loving Jesus.

Christian Books for Mom

There’s nothing wrong with reading a book that is maybe a bit more on the ‘light’ side. In fact, I have a tendency to lean toward light reading right now! Our seasons of motherhood fluctuate often, and sometimes we need to give ourselves grace with what we read. The holiday season is a perfect example of this. Lighter Christian books for mom devotionals can lead us to deep truth without making our busy holiday season even more stressful. Other times we need to dig deep into God’s truth. These Christian mom books are meant to inspire and encourage you as you seek to grow in Christ.

Even if you are a mom that has minimum time to read, chances are that you have time to listen to one of these books. Consider getting an audible subscription. This is how I read most of my books and I love it!

1. Disciplines of a Godly Women by Barbara Hughes

There is a reason I put this one first. If there are anyone Christian books for mom you should read to turn your affections and heart more toward Jesus, it is this one. Disciplines sound like a harsh word, but as you will find, it is just a catalyst for sincere growth.

2. The Life Giving Homeby Sally Clarkson

Growing our homes in a life-giving way can lead our families back to Christ. Around here I call that a ‘healing home’ a home that points back to our ultimate healer: Jesus Christ. This is a practical and inspiring book that turns our entire home back to pressing into Jesus. This is a popular Christian book for mothers that will point you into deeper truths and inspire your home-making skills.

3. Give them Grace by Elyse M Fitzpatrick and Jessica Thompson

This was another life-changing Christian mom book as it radically changes the way you will think about discipline and dazzling your children toward the love of Christ. Instead of making your children ‘good’, you will direct them to Jesus. Instead of living by rules, you will grow them in a love for Jesus, which is truly the only thing that will bring heart change.

If you have never put this on your list to read of Christian books for mothers, make sure to add it now!

4. Redeeming Childbirthby Angie Tolpin

I wish I would of had this book for my first pregnancy. Now whenever a mom is pregnant, I try to gently recommend this book. Pregnancy can be hard, childbirth can be hard, and we know parenting is hard! But when you are stuck in a difficult pregnancy with emotions and hormones steamrollering around, it can be hard to find your bearings! Angie argues that childbirth is a spiritual journey that is meant to bring you back to your Savior.

5. Mere Motherhood by Cindy Rollins

This is a very light read, but it is intentional. This book serves more as a memoir of a mother’s journey toward sanctification. What I found fascinating about this book is that you will start to ponder your own journey in light of Cindy’s. It is more than just another women’s story. She directs your thoughts toward Christ as you read about your journey in motherhood. This is another great Christian book for mom.

6. Labor with Hope by Gloria Furman

“Why is this like it is?” Maybe you have asked yourself that questions during pregnancy and labor. Gloria brings some beautiful gospel truth that will give you hope and encouragement throughout your pregnancy and childbirth years. Many people try to offer encouragement, advice and hope to pregnant women, but the Bible is the place that has real hope. It’s nothing like anyone else can give.

7. Real Moms…Real Jesusby Jill Savage

The rubber meets the ground with this book. During the motherhood journey, we often lose ourselves. We lose our purpose and our heart for Jesus. As the laundry piles high, the stresses surmount, and our own expectations crumble, we can feel utterly hope-devoid. Does Jesus know how we feel? Absolutely, and Jill Savage is about to bring you to the Bible and show you exactly how he knows.

8. Parenting: 14 Gospel Principles That Can Radically Change Your Family by Paul David Tripp

As parents, we need more. We need more than the latest trends with parenting styles and philosophies. There’s more to parenting than laundry, carpools, and playdates. At the end of the day, it’s easy to feel lost. Paul David Tripp outlines 14 Gospel principles that will radically change the way you look at parenting. This is a must-read for every parent that will inspire and encourage your parenting.

9. The Gospel Comes with a House Key by
Rosaria Champagne Butterfield

Although this is not exclusively a ‘Christian book for mothers’, I left it on this list because our mothering and homes are closely tied together. Jesus didn’t evangelize by inviting people to Christian rallies, or conventions, or handing them the latest Christian book. The backdrop to many of his conversations was radical, ordinary hospitality. This is certainly a book to put on your Christian books for mom list.

10. Risen Motherhood by Emily Jensen and Laura Wifler

I found the authors of this book through their podcast “Risen Motherhood.” These short but insightful podcasts encourage me in true Gospel mothering and stretch my Biblical understanding of basic Christian principles. They are two women that want to see Jesus glorified and mothers succeeding at turning their hearts to Jesus while mothering well. They frequently talk about the latest Christian mom books, which is one of the reasons I was so excited when they came out with their own book. The tagline for the book is “Gospel Hope for Everyday Moments.” It is an excellent book to put on your Christian mom’s books lists.

11. The Ministry of Motherhood by Sally Clarkson

This is a book that is near and dear to my heart. In fact, I wrote a blog post that has this exact title, “The Ministry of Motherhood and the Interruptions that Drive us Toward Jesus.” Sally Clarkson once again comes at motherhood with true intentions at leading us to understand that motherhood is not just a job, it is a calling, a calling that is rooted in Christ Jesus. Sally follows Christ’s example of discipleship with his disciples and shows you how to make an eternal difference in the life of your child. Sally has so many amazing Christian mom books, and I would honestly recommend all of them. She is an incredible and insightful author.

12. Treasuring Christ When your Hands are Fullby Gloria Furman

Are you a frazzled mom? There are dozens of Christian books for mothers about being stressed, frazzled, and unwound; but this one rises above them with the simple mission to point you back to Christ. It is one of those Christian books for mothers that truly points your affections back to Christ in the mundane everyday tasks of motherhood.

13. Raising Grateful Kids in an Entitled World by Kristen Welch

It can feel sad and guilty to admit, but my kids are entitled. I shudder to write this, but your kids probably are too. Ekk! There I said it. Not that any of us are doing a poor job teaching our children gratitude or good morals; it’s just that when we live in such a 1st world country, we automatically are gifted with certain things. So how do we raise grateful kids? How do we teach them the difference between a want and a need? Kristen’s book is a must-add for your Christian books for mom list.

14. Love Unending: Rediscovering Your Marriage in the Midst of Motherhoodby Becky Thompson

You need this book if you are married with children. Just go add it to your Christian books for mothers list to read and thank me later. Haven’t done it, do it now. Just do it. Because chances are that your marriage has hit some rocks since kids entered the picture. The demands of children become quite intense, and marriage takes a back seat fast. So grab these Christian books for moms and rediscover your marriage amid motherhood.

15. Hope for the Weary Mom: Let God Meet You in the Mess by Stacey Thacker and Brooke McGlothlin

I list this last in my Christian mom’s books list for a reason. Christian mom books can be filled with unhelpful self-help that is not aimed at pointing us to Christ but instead lifting us up to higher. However, it’s easy to get weary. It’s easy to lose hope. This book will offer you hope at returning to the God who created you, loves you, and wants to see you closer to Him. Yes, you are weary, but we have a God that can replenish us better than we can ourselves!

Inspirational Christian Books for Mothers

15 books are a lot to read! Last year I had a goal to read 20 books throughout the year, and although I hit my goal, it was tough! I couldn’t believe that twenty books was a tough thing to get done in a year. Before kids, I could crank out many more than that. Motherhood changes things. Don’t read all these Christian books for mothers in a year. There is just too much content. Spice things up by adding some other books. Read some Christmas devotionals around the holiday. Read some non-fiction. Read some deeper content. These Christian books for mom will still be here!

Tracking your Christian Books for Mom Reading List

Speaking of lists, do you keep track of your reading throughout the year? I have used Goodreads for a while and I love it. However, sometimes it’s nice to track my reading with a pen and paper. That is the exact reason I created a Personal Reading Log Planner. It is a fun and creative way to color and keep track of all my Christian books for mothers in my planner.

Enjoy this list of Christian mom books as you seek Christ in your affections and life!
