Advent is something that we usually consider the most around the Christmas period. However, the idea behind Advent can be extrapolated and used for other holidays like Easter! Advent simply means ‘coming’. Traditionally is the spiritual preparation for the coming of Jesus (Christmas) or the second coming of Jesus.
Easter Advent Calendar
Although Advent is most closely related to the Christmas holiday, it certainly can be used for the Easter season as well. However, it is not truly a part of the liturgical church calendar.
If we are strictly going by the Christian calendar, some different events lead up to Easter Sunday.
Lent is the 40 days before Easter. This is a time of penance and fasting. Next comes Holy Week which includes Maundy Thursday (Jesus’ last supper), and Good Friday (the day of Jesus’ crucifixion), and finally comes Easter Sunday, which is the day of Jesus’ resurrection.
As you can see, none of these things reflects what we traditionally know as advent.
However, the reason why advent calendars can be so effective at Christmastime is that they help teach children the events leading up to Jesus’ birth and prepare their hearts for the true meaning of Christmas.
So, although there is not a true advent for Easter, it certainly can be used as a preparation tool to teach children the gospel message of Easter. These different Easter countdown calendar options could be a great way to incorporate some faith teaching into your Easter season!

Easter Countdown Calendar Ideas
Would you like to take your Easter Advent Calendar a bit further? I have some wonderful countdown-to-Easter ideas that might just fit what you are looking for!
If you already are using Shepherd’s Treasure for your Christmas Elf alternative, you can use your shepherd and this Easter set to go on a similar advent treasure hunt for the true meaning of Easter. Smaller children especially love these types of Easter advent calendar traditions.
Another countdown that we have done during Christmas is Advent Blocks and they also have a countdown to Easter activity that is great if you just want something ready to go. It may fast become a family favorite!
Here are some other Easter advent activities and ideas:
- Using our Easter Countdown Printable, fill Easter eggs with the prompts and open them 12 days before Easter.
- Do a giving Easter tradition like this one.
- Enjoy some Easter coloring together as a family. Here are my Easter coloring pages
- Read Easter picture books and stories that explain the real meaning of Easter.
- Enjoy a scavenger hunt as a family.
Ways to Use These
There is no fixed date that you have to start the Easter countdown calendar. Since there is no consistent date for Easter and the Bible text does not indicate exactly when Easter Sunday takes place, you can have some flexibility in when you start the Easter countdown calendar! There are twelve activities in the print out, but feel free to use as many or as few of them as you desire.
There are endless ways to use these Easter advent calendar ideas. My personal favorite is using the countdown to Easter eggs as a fun way of incorporating activities and scripture into the Easter season. Every once in a while, we go see the Easter Bunny just for fun. I know not all believers would approve of that, so there are two versions of the fun Easter countdown. One with an Easter bunny activity and one without.
You could also do a family memorization challenge, or just have the printable advent scripture cards on the table throughout the season.
I’d love to know what you are doing for your own Easter advent. Continue the conversation over on Instagram or shoot me a DM, I would love to hear from you!
