What is the Meaning of Advent?
Many people think of advent as only the Christmas advent that has been made so popular by consumerism. However, advent in the Bible is a time of waiting, preparation, and expectation of both the birth of Jesus and the second coming of Jesus Christ. Advent is a church tradition, not something that is specifically outlined in the Bible.
This begs the question, should Bible-believing Christians celebrate Advent? Perhaps the best verse in the Bible to answer this question is below. Honor each other’s convictions, and if you feel like celebrating Advent, do so.
One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God.
Romans 14:5-6 ESV
I have found that using advent calendar Bible verses, traditions, and activities, is some of the best ways for my children to understand the significance of the Christmas story. We love creating Advent season traditions that hopefully they will remember for a lifetime. My oldest child throughout the entire year will occasionally talk about our Shepherd and when he is coming back. There are a lot of different advent calendars out there and it can be difficult to choose which one will be most effective for your family. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself!
Bible Verses for Advent Calendar
One tradition that is often seen at Christmas is reviewing, memorizing, or using advent calendars filled with Bible verses to remind oneself of the story of Christmas. Bible verses for Advent can help us center our minds on what matters during this frantic and busy season.
If you would like a simple reading advent plan, I have a free printable advent calendar below. The Advent calendar bible verses here outline the story of Jesus’ birth, from the story of Mother Mary, right to the Wise Men, and direct our minds toward the Good News of Jesus’ birth. The first coming of Jesus is a wonderful event to not only celebrate but also contemplate throughout the Advent season!

Advent Cards for the Family
The next free download focuses on advent scripture cards. There are 25 printable advent cards that are beautifully designed to be used in a variety of settings throughout the holiday season. You can make up your own advent tradition using these cards or use them in a current tradition.
Many of these use advent cards to help emphasize the Christmas story throughout the month of December and right into Christmas Day. My favorite way to use these advent scriptures is with the Shepherd Treasure which is an alternative to Elf on the Shelf. The shepherd and book come with a pack of advent cards, but there are additional advent card packs that you can purchase for a new year.
There are many different advent traditions that are already made for you if you would rather not make your own up! Here are a few of my favorites.
- Advent Blocks – our ultimate favorite! (use code FRIENDS15 for 15% off your order!)
- Unwrapping the Greatest Gift – Uses the Jesse Tree Advent Calendar tradition.
- The Shepherds Treasure – Similar to Elf on the Shelf, but with a Christian twist
- The Giving Manger

What are you going to get with these advent scripture cards? They are just simple cards that are sized to 3.6″x 4.25″, this makes them the ideal size to print and use with your advent traditions.
I personally rotate the advent cards that come in our Shepherds Treasure box and these. Some years I use both sets and some years I use one or the other. It sort of depends on how I’m feeling! However, you don’t have to use these cards just with a pre-made advent activity. You can also come up with your own way to use them.

One way that we like to use the cards is with our Shepherds Treasure Advent tradition or with our Advent Blocks. We typically do both traditions throughout the season and either we read the verses with our morning devotional or the Shepherd brings the card when he moves. I want my children to understand the significance of the birth of Christ but also enjoy traditions and find the true meaning of Christmas through these activities.
How do we choose which advent traditions to participate in? Last year was probably the year we did the most. I wanted to try out Advent Blocks because they were generous enough to send them to me. We loved that tradition and we will continue it throughout the years, but maybe not every year. My son was bound and determined that we do our Shepherd Treasure tradition. Meanwhile, I really wanted to read The Light of the World by Marty Machowski! Truth be told, we couldn’t do all of them.
Truth be told, we couldn’t keep up with all of them. I set aside the Light of the World for another year and combined the other two advent traditions. It worked out great for our family, even though it was still a lot!
