Coloring isn’t just about filling in blank spaces; it’s a creative and reflective process. When children (or adults) engage with coloring sheets featuring Mary, Joseph, and the infant Jesus, it offers an opportunity to visually explore the characters of the Nativity story. For many, it’s also a great way to reflect on the mother of Jesus, her unwavering faith, and the humble yet vital role of Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus.

Children can learn the key events of the Nativity as they color a line drawing of the Nativity scene or Joseph coloring pages depicting his journey to Bethlehem. For older kids, detailed patterns and more complex designs, like advanced animal drawings with the stable’s animals or the wise men following the star of Bethlehem, can make the experience more engaging.

You will also find printable Mary coloring pages and Joseph coloring pages with the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph written above on the sheet. These two are provided for simplicity and focus exclusively on these two main characters in the nativity story.

I’ve also used coloring pages like these during the holiday season by just placing them out at a free art table. I provide some fun coloring and art materials and let children use them as a guide in their own creative expression. It’s always fun to see what little children come up with!

There are many whimsical design choices available with the entire Holy Family, nativity scenes, wise men, shepherds, and more. Each page includes a scripture verse from the Nativity story for Bible verse reinforcement. There are hours of coloring within these pages!

Fun Facts About Mary, Joseph, and Coloring

  • Did you know that Pope Pius XII declared St. Joseph as the patron of workers? Coloring pages that show him working as a carpenter are great for teaching kids this fun fact.
  • Another fun fact is that many Nativity scenes are modeled after the first live Nativity created by St. Francis of Assisi in 1223. Today’s Nativity coloring sheets continue that tradition by helping families and children picture the scene.
