It was early in the morning and I sat next to my Christmas tree with my Bible open, but my brain was exhausted. My guess is that you have felt the same fatigue next to your beloved Bible as I have. After all, when this article was originally posted, it was just a measly 8 days before Christmas and there’s no doubt in my mind that many families (just like ours) have an abundance of Christmas programs, commitments, and family obligations.

Dear friends, as mothers and homemakers, we often find ourselves juggling endless tasks. From managing household duties to tending to our children’s needs, it can be challenging to carve out quiet time for ourselves, let alone for God. Yet, spending time in God’s Word is one of the most vital aspects of nurturing our spiritual life and growing as a servant of God.

Actually, dare I say it? If you want to minister to your family effectively the best springboard to doing so is through Bible reading and prayer.

The Bible isn’t just another book; it is the very Scriptures inspired by the Spirit of God. Through the Word of Christ, we find guidance, encouragement, and the ultimate truth of God’s will for our lives. Let’s explore why daily Bible reading is not only necessary but transformative for mothers and homemakers.

The Importance of Bible Reading

The Bible—both the Old Testament and the New Testament—is a double-edged sword, cutting through false teachings and offering the knowledge of God. The apostle Paul reminds us in 2 Timothy 3:16 (New International Version) that

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.”

2 Timothy 3:16 NIV

As Christian mothers, our ultimate goal is to be a godly wife and a loving guide to our children. To do this effectively, we need to soak in the truth of God found in the whole Bible.

Actually, wait, let’s back up a minute. We sometimes confuse our ultimate goal, don’t we? Our ultimate goal is glorifying God and enjoying him forever. However, if you are in the season of child raising and homemaking (which can extend long before having children and long after), your ultimate task (which I believe brings God glory) is in the home.

The reading of Scripture reveals the character of God, His master plan, and His goodness to His people. From the fiery serpents in the wilderness to the crossing of the Red Sea, the history of God’s interactions with His children gives us a big picture of His faithfulness. Spending time in the Word equips us to combat the patterns of this world and align our hearts with the perfect will of God.

When We Are Too Busy as Mothers and Homemakers

If you’re like me, there are never enough hours in the day. Between social media notifications, meal prep, and the demands of family members, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Yet, just as we invest in a gym membership for physical health, we must set aside time for the Word of God for our spiritual growth. Daily Bible reading acts as a stream of water that nourishes our souls, helping us stand firm in our faith.

The good news is that you don’t need hours of uninterrupted quiet time to engage with Scripture. Even a little bit of reading on a consistent basis can transform our attitudes of the heart. Jesus Himself said that man does not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4). If our Lord Jesus Christ prioritized Scripture in His earthly ministry, how much more should we?

But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Matthew 4:4 ESV

The Top 5 Benefits of Reading Your Bible

Sometimes I hate practical lists because I feel like they cheapen something great. However, sometimes I love them because they lay out for us reality. Reading your Bible is so much more than a list of benefits but for practicality’s sake, I’m going to list out some helpful benefits of reading our Bibles.

  1. Building a Strong Foundation: Regular Bible reading lays a strong foundation for your Christian life. The Word of God serves as a sword of the Spirit, equipping us to face life’s challenges with grace and wisdom.
  2. Understanding God’s Will: Through the Bible, we gain an understanding of God’s will and the means of grace He provides. It helps us discern His plan for our daily life and ensures we’re walking in His way.
  3. Encouragement in Tough Times: Life as a mother can be exhausting. The Word of Christ is a source of hope, reminding us of God’s love and His promise of eternal life.
  4. Guarding Against False Teachings: In the last days, the Bible warns against the danger of false teachings. By immersing ourselves in biblical truth, we can stand firm in the faith and teach our children to do the same.
  5. Spiritual Growth: As we read the entire Bible, from the book of the Law to the New Testament, we grow in the fear of the Lord and the knowledge of God. This spiritual growth strengthens our family relationships and even contributes to a successful marriage.

Did you know there is scientific evidence of the benefits of reading our Bibles? A study published in the Journal of Religion and Health found that spiritual practices, including Bible study, can lower anxiety and promote feelings of peace. Participants who engage in spiritual reading or reflection tend to report feeling more relaxed and better able to cope with stress.

Another study that I found truly fascinating published in 2019, found that individuals who engage in religious practices, including reading sacred texts like the Bible, are less likely to engage in substance abuse. There is no doubt that the Word of God is powerful.

The Inerrancy of Scripture

One of the most beautiful truths about the Bible is its inerrancy. Every word is inspired by God and serves a purpose. The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul. While devotional books and worship leaders can inspire us, nothing replaces the authority and inspiration of God’s Word.

Understanding the inerrancy of Scripture gives us confidence in its promises and commands. From the paradise of God in Genesis to the Tree of life in Revelation, the Bible is consistent and trustworthy. It is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path, guiding us in the way God intended for His children.

How to Schedule Bible Reading in a Busy Schedule

Scheduling Bible reading in a busy lifestyle can seem challenging, but with intentional planning, it becomes manageable. One of the simplest ways to incorporate Bible reading into your routine is to set a specific time each day, treating it as a non-negotiable appointment.

Finding a time that works consistently for you is key.

Additionally, making Bible reading a priority in small, consistent increments can be very effective for busy individuals. Instead of feeling pressured to read large portions, focus on short, meaningful passages or chapters. I call this topical Bible reading. It’s when we focus on a theme instead of reading straight through the Bible.

As many of you know, my most effective time for Bible reading is right away in the morning at around 2-3 am. I used to do Bible reading after I clocked out of work in the mornings, but I found that by the time I fought my way through working with 3 (at the time) young children, I was at my wit’s end and Bible reading was ineffective and often fraught with anger and frustration at my children. I was demanding too much of them. Not only did they have to leave me alone to work, but then they also had to leave me alone to do my Bible reading and prayer.

I’ve taken great comfort over the years realizing that God knows that we are mothers. There is grace in that. It’s not an excuse to ignore him, but rather a comfort when we are entrusted with taking care of the precious children that he has given to us.

Bible reading and prayer are a top priority, but also lovingly caring for our children is a priority too. I realized one day that what I needed to do was switch the time when I focused on Bible reading and prayer. It was a small change, but a very impactful one. If Bible reading and prayer are not working for you at a specific time, then instead of fighting it, make adjustments until it does work.

A great book on Jesus understanding your motherhood is “Real Moms, Real Jesus” by Jill Savage. I’ve mentioned it many times on my blog and YouTube videos. It gets a high level of recommendation from me.

You can even break your readings into multiple sessions throughout the day—starting with a few verses in the morning, revisiting them at lunch, and reflecting again before bed. I’ve tried this method and to be quite transparent I become so frazzled by trying to get everything in that it’s not very effective for me, but everyone is different and that type of routine might be worth trying for some women.

By being flexible and intentional with your time, Bible reading can become a vital part of your daily routine, even amidst a busy schedule.

Set a Powerful Example

One of the greatest benefits of Bible reading as mother is the powerful example it sets for our children. When they see us prioritizing time in the Word of God, it teaches them the value of building a strong foundation in faith.

Our consistent devotion to the Bible whether during quiet time or in the midst of daily life demonstrates to our kids that God’s Word is not just a book, but a source of wisdom, guidance, and comfort. By modeling a love for Scripture, we inspire them to seek God’s truth for themselves, shaping their attitudes of the heart and nurturing their spiritual growth. This legacy of faith becomes a means of grace, drawing our family closer to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Closing

Mothers, the reading of Scripture is not just another task to check off your to-do list. It is a lifeline, offering good things for your heart and home. As you plan for the new year, let daily Bible reading become a non-negotiable part of your routine. Dive into the books of the Bible, cherish the Word of God, and let it shape your understanding of God’s will.

May we, as God’s children, prioritize the Word of Christ and allow the Holy Spirit to guide us in all things. Remember, the Bible is not just a book but the very breath of God, leading us into eternal life and a righteous life here on earth. Let us approach the new year with a renewed commitment to the law of the Lord, knowing that through His Word, we find the way, the truth, and the life in Christ Jesus.

Blessings to you, dear friends, as you embark on this journey of spiritual growth and understanding. Amen.
