Truly Free Review: The First Natural Laundry Detergent I’ve Trusted Since 2017

We love it when you share!

Truly Free review from a mom of five who spent years researching non-toxic laundry detergents. Discover if Truly Free Laundry Wash and all their products are worth the switch.

For nearly eight years, I’ve been searching for a laundry detergent I could genuinely trust.

My journey started back in 2017 when I was pregnant with my first son and decided I wanted to cloth diaper. Like many moms stepping into the world of natural living, I thought I was already making pretty good choices. We were using what I believed was a more natural laundry detergent, and I assumed that was enough.

Then I started researching.

The deeper I dug into laundry detergents, the more shocked I became. I discovered that many products marketed as “natural” weren’t actually detergents at all. They were cleaning products that could freshen clothing but didn’t necessarily contain the ingredients needed to remove oils, soils, and residue effectively.

That distinction matters.

When you’re washing cloth diapers, residue left behind in the fabric can cause all kinds of problems. Diapers can develop odors, absorbency issues, and buildup over time. What I learned from the cloth diaper community was that a true detergent is necessary to get fabrics genuinely clean.

As I researched, I also became increasingly aware of the questionable ingredients hiding in many conventional detergents. Fragrances, optical brighteners, preservatives, and chemicals linked to skin irritation and other health concerns seemed to be everywhere.

For years, I felt stuck between two options: Either use a detergent that cleaned well but contained ingredients I wasn’t comfortable with. Or use a “natural” product that had a cleaner ingredient list but didn’t actually perform well.

It seemed impossible to find both until I found Truly Free.

Why I Started Looking Beyond Conventional Detergents

One thing that stood out to me during my research was how differently countries approach chemical safety.

A statistic shared by Truly Free caught my attention: Europe has banned 12,000 chemicals from consumer products while the United States restricts only 16. Sixteen.

Whether that exact number changes over time, the reality remains the same: many ingredients allowed in household products today are worth taking a closer look at.

As homemakers, we use cleaning products every single day. We wash our children’s clothes. We clean our kitchens. We scrub our bathrooms. We wash dishes our families eat from. These products become part of our daily lives, which is why ingredient transparency matters so much to me.

I don’t believe we need to live in fear. But I do believe we should be informed. And once I learned more about what was hiding in many conventional products, I knew I wanted better options for our home.

The Story Behind Truly Free

One of the things I appreciate most about Truly Free is the heart behind the company.

Truly Free was founded by Stephen Ezell after his own family experienced health concerns connected to household products. What began as a personal mission eventually became a company dedicated to helping families reduce their exposure to harmful chemicals while also reducing plastic waste.

Their goal is simple: create products that are both effective and genuinely safe.

That might sound obvious, but as someone who has spent years researching ingredients and testing products, I can tell you that finding both of those things in one company is surprisingly rare.

Many brands focus on effectiveness but ignore ingredients. Others focus on ingredients but sacrifice performance.

Truly Free is attempting to bridge that gap.

If you want to learn more about Stephen Ezell, one of my favorite resources is this podcast by the Homesteading Family. It was superb, and I think you’ll learn more about the Truly Free line, but also the heart behind everything they do.

Another thing that immediately stood out to me was their refill system. Rather than purchasing a new plastic bottle every time you run out, you receive refill pouches that are used to refill your original container.

It’s a simple change, but over time it can significantly reduce plastic waste in your home.

My Favorite Truly Free Products

While Truly Free offers a wide range of cleaning products, there are a handful that have become favorites in our home.

Laundry Wash

This is the product that originally drew me to Truly Free, and it’s still my favorite.

After years of searching, this is the first non-toxic laundry wash that I’ve used consistently and felt completely confident recommending.

The detergent uses QuadraSalt Technology to tackle tough stains while avoiding many of the ingredients commonly found in conventional detergents. It’s free from chlorine bleach, phosphates, sodium sulfate, and 1,4-dioxane.

What I love most is that it actually works.

As a mom of five boys, I don’t have lightly worn clothing coming through my laundry room. We deal with dirt, grass stains, food stains, mud, and all the messes that come with an active family.

The clothes come out clean. The detergent works well in cold water. It’s septic safe. And it leaves clothes smelling fresh without the overpowering fragrance that many conventional detergents use.

Most importantly, I finally feel like I don’t have to compromise between clean ingredients and clean laundry.

Is the Laundry Wash Really a Detergent?

This was one of my biggest questions when I first discovered Truly Free.

If you’ve spent any time researching non-toxic laundry products, you’ve probably noticed that many products marketed as “natural laundry detergents” aren’t actually detergents at all. Some are little more than soap-based cleaners, while others rely on ingredients that freshen clothing but don’t effectively remove oils, dirt, and buildup from fabric.

This was something I learned quickly during my cloth diapering journey. In the cloth diaper community, a true detergent isn’t optional—it’s necessary. Without one, residue can build up in the fibers, leading to odors, absorbency issues, and diapers that simply aren’t getting clean.

So what actually makes a detergent a detergent?

At its most basic level, a detergent needs a surfactant. Surfactants, or surface-active agents, are the backbone of any laundry detergent. They work by breaking the surface tension of water, allowing it to penetrate fabric fibers, lift dirt and oils, trap them, and rinse them away during the wash cycle.

Many high-performing detergents also include additional ingredients such as builders that soften hard water, enzymes that break down tough stains, and bleaching agents that help brighten fabrics.

The good news is that although Truly Free Laundry Wash may not qualify as a detergent in the conventional sense, it functions exactly the same.

Rather than relying on soap or vinegar-based cleaning methods, Truly Free uses plant-derived surfactants combined with what they call QuadraSalt Technology—a blend of four natural salts designed to boost cleaning performance. These active ingredients work together to lift dirt, grease, and stains from fabrics while remaining free from many of the ingredients commonly found in conventional detergents.

Unlike many mainstream laundry products, Truly Free avoids optical brighteners, synthetic dyes, and artificial fragrances. Instead, it relies on naturally derived ingredients and essential oils, making it a popular choice among families with sensitive skin concerns.

What impressed me most is that Truly Free managed to solve the problem I’ve been running into since 2017. It provides the cleaning power of a true detergent without forcing me to compromise on ingredients. After years of searching for a product that could effectively clean cloth diapers, kids’ clothes, towels, and everyday laundry while still fitting within a lower-toxin lifestyle, Truly Free is one of the few products I’ve found that genuinely does both.

Dryer Angel

If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you know I’m usually not a huge fan of heavily scented products.

The Dryer Angel surprised me.

It uses essential oils to leave laundry smelling fresh without relying on traditional fabric softeners or synthetic fragrance blends.

The scent is noticeable but not overwhelming.

Our towels smell wonderful after using it, and my kids ask for it when I forget to put it in the dryer!

This has become one of those little products that makes laundry feel just a bit more enjoyable.

Everyday Cleaner

The Everyday Cleaner is probably the product I reach for most often throughout the day.

Kitchen counters. Homeschool tables. High chairs. Bathroom counters. Door handles.

It works on virtually every surface I need to clean. I appreciate having a cleaner that is effective without filling the room with harsh chemical smells. I also use it for my floors in my mop. Truly Free has a floor cleaner, but this works great for me, and then I don’t have to order another product!

As a busy homemaker, simplicity matters. The fewer products I need to keep under my sink, the better.

Dish Soap

The Dish Soap performs well for everyday dishwashing and fits beautifully into a non-toxic kitchen routine.

I appreciate that Truly Free focuses on plant-based ingredients while still creating products that can handle daily messes.

Dishwasher Soap

Finding a dishwasher detergent that actually works can be surprisingly difficult.

Thankfully, this one does. My dishwasher is also painfully old, and the soap still does the trick.

Our dishes come out clean, and I don’t have to wonder what kind of residue is being left behind on the plates and cups my family uses every day.

Stain Stick

With five boys, stain removal is practically a full-time job. Breastfeeding was another situation where I constantly felt like stains were showing up on my clothes, and the stain stick was flawless in removing the stain every time. I keep the stick in our master bathroom, which allows me to

The Stain Stick has become a helpful tool for tackling spots before laundry day, especially on everyday clothing that sees plenty of adventure.
