As Christian parents and educators, one of the most fulfilling tasks is sharing the beauty of Scripture with children in ways that will stick with them as they grow. One of the most effective ways to do this is by encouraging them to memorize Bible verses. Oh yes, I’m well aware that this can be hard! However, it is also such a powerful way to support their little brains in understanding the faith.
New Growth Press has recently released a new title in its popular Bible Verses to Remember series, A Wonderful Surprise, and it is an exciting addition to any family’s faith-building library. Our Favorite Part – There are two things that really stick out to me about this book that add to it’s uniqueness. First, this does not have sterotypical Easter illustrations (like Easter eggs) and written comparisons to Easter items (like bunnies and Easter eggs). The story launches right into the storyline of Jesus and I appreciated the directness. I also truly love the illustrations. They are vibrant and beautiful!

Benefits of Memorizing Scripture
Memorizing Scripture is an essential practice for children and adults alike, and the benefits are far-reaching. First and foremost, memorizing Bible verses helps solidify our understanding and relationship with God’s Word.
As Psalm 119:11 says,
I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
Psalm 119:11 ESV
Having Scripture readily accessible in our minds equips us to face the challenges of everyday life. Our family participates in our local Awana program and my oldest child right now memorizes his scripture by using his Yoto Player and a customized card of his books and songs. It’s such a practical way to memorize scripture!
Memorized verses also serve as a powerful tool for providing comfort and encouragement in times of difficulty, as children can recall verses that speak to God’s faithfulness, love, and protection.
Additionally, memorizing Scripture strengthens a child’s spiritual foundation. It enables them to grow in their knowledge of God and equips them to make wise decisions based on the truth of God’s Word. As children develop a habit of memorizing and reflecting on Scripture, they are more likely to apply it in their daily lives and grow in their faith over time.

A Wonderful Surprise
“A Wonderful Surprise” is the newest addition to the Bible Verses to Remember series, and it’s an absolute delight. Aimed at young children, the story is centered around the theme of Easter and the incredible surprise of Jesus’ resurrection. The book focuses on the joy and awe that come with the realization of Christ’s victory over death.
The fundamental verse that is focused on is Luke 19:38,
“Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord.”
The book tells the story in a way that is accessible to young readers, while also teaching them foundational truths about Easter and the resurrection. The verse is reused multiple times to emphasize the connection of expressing something that is very exciting.
The vibrant, full-color illustrations bring the story to life, helping children visualize the events surrounding Jesus’ death and resurrection in a way that is age-appropriate and engaging.
What makes A Wonderful Surprise special is its ability to convey the deep joy and hope of the Easter story without overwhelming young readers with complicated theological concepts.
This verse serves as both a reminder of the true meaning of Easter and a tool for building a child’s biblical knowledge. It’s a wonderful way to help children internalize the message of the resurrection and carry it with them as they grow.
