The Psalms are filled with outcries of distress but also cries of thanksgiving and gratitude to a God that hears. Let’s dive into the 10 powerful Psalms of gratitude and Psalms of thanksgiving that will refresh your heart and renew your mind.

The Power of Praise and Thanksgiving
The Psalms seem to be brimming most with verses of gratitude and Psalms of thanksgiving. There is such a mix of Psalms from laments to praise, and from praise to thanksgiving. Psalms of gratitude, thanksgiving, and praise, seem to take up most of this melodic book of the Bible.
Many times, the Psalms quickly change from thanksgiving to Lament, or from praise to despair. David was notorious for this.
He would one moment be wallowing in his bleak situation and then suddenly change directions and he would be lifting great thanksgivings and gratitude. Imagine what it would take to imitate that in our own life.
We acknowledge our turmoil and disappointment, but then immediately turn around and give thanks. It is a powerful practice.
Psalms of Thanksgiving
We shouldn’t just think of the word “Thanksgiving” only around the holidays. Thanksgiving and gratitude should be a byproduct of our happiness in Christ all 12 months of the year; not just during the month of November!
The Psalms are filled with verses of thanksgiving that are directed at glorifying God and creating a satisfied heart in him. God wants you to come with him with Psalms of thanksgiving! As Psalms 95:2 (NIV) says, Let us come to him with thanksgiving.
As we just saw above, Jesus chose to thank his Father in heaven during an incredibly sad time. Even though Jesus knew that Lazarus was going to live, he still wept. If we look to Jesus as our example, we can see that the toughest of times still need ample amounts of gratitude.
Practical Ways to Practice Thankfulness
- Spend time in the scripture looking up verses of gratitude.
- Get together with a friend and talk about what God has done in your life.
- Memorize scriptures of gratitude. Psalms of Thanksgiving is a wonderful place to start!

- Hang scriptures in your home that remind you of being grateful.
- Practice gratitude at mealtimes with your family.
- Volunteer with your family for a local need.

Psalm 111:1-2
Do you ponder God’s works? Thing one is a very interesting verse. Pondering God’s works can be very therapeutic. Think about the grandeur of creation! The hills, mountains, streams, and beautiful places. How did he create these wonders?! Do you delight in his creation? Just by delighting in his works, you are giving his praise and delight.
Praise the Lord,
I will extol the Lord with all my heart
in the council of the upright and in the assembly.
Great are the works of the Lord;
they are pondered by all who delight in them.Psalm 111:1-2 NIV
Psalm 92:1
It is good. It is good for you to praise the Lord. Insert your name in this passage for a moment. I’ll go first, “It is good for Rachael to praise the Lord!”
When life gets hard or your heart feels stressed, take a moment to recite this to yourself. Whatever your circumstances it is good to give thanks and praise our Lord.

Have you ever thought of how powerful these Psalms are? He is your strength!
I don’t know about you, but often my strength seems lacking. I can never do quite enough and be quite strong enough. But this Psalm tells me that my strength actually comes from the Lord!

my heart trusts in him, and he helps me.
My heart leaps for joy,
and with my song I praise him.
Psalm 106:1
It can be easy to feel unloved or neglected. Especially as women we often feel unloved and underappreciated. Isn’t it good to know in those moments, that we have a God whose love never runs out.
Praise the Lord,
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
his love endures forever.Psalm 106:1 NIV
Psalms 100:4-5
Again, we see that God’s love endures forever, and he is faithful. I find it interesting that the Psalmist doesn’t end with ‘his faithfulness continues.’ Instead, he adds the ‘through all generations.’ God’s faithfulness was not better in years past.
Just because the world may seem bleaker, does not mean that God has changed. His faithfulness is the same throughout all generations, and all of the time!
Enter his gates with thanksgiving
Psalm 100:4-5 NIV
and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.
For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;
his faithfulness continues through all generations.
Psalms 7:17
These Psalms of gratitude are a reminder that God deserves our gratitude and thankfulness simply because he is Lord. He is righteous and deserves our praise.

The Power of Thanksgiving
I once read that in the Bible (Old and New Testament) whenever there was thanksgiving and gratitude, God was often stirred up to perform a miracle or great act. King David was a man of gratitude and thanksgiving. In one spot the Bible tells us he intentionally gave thanks 7 times a day (Psalms 119:164). I find it interesting that in Psalms 89:23 God promises David that he is going to strike down his enemies.
I will crush his foes before him
and strike down his adversaries.Psalm 89:23 NIV
We have no idea if David’s faithfulness to gratitude anything has to do with God’s plan to strike down his enemies, but I think it’s safe to assume that many of King David’s faithful practices, like giving thanks, led to God’s favor upon him.
Give thanks to your heavenly Father, you will see unending rewards for your faithfulness.
